D’Angelo Reportedly Working On Long-Awaited Follow-Up To Acclaimed ‘Black Messiah’ Album
D’Angelo is reviving the magic of Black Messiah with a new album in the works.
A decade after his acclaimed comeback album Black Messiah solidified his place in neo-soul history, D’Angelo is back in the studio. The singer, who captivated fans with his 2014 release blending soul, funk, jazz, and political commentary, is now deep into recording his follow-up.

Raphael Saadiq, a longtime friend and collaborator of D’Angelo, shared the news on the latest episode of the Rolling Stone Music Now podcast. Saadiq revealed that D’Angelo is currently working on “six pieces” and is eager for Saadiq to contribute his bass skills to the project.

Raphael Saadiq mentioned,
“D’s in a good space… He’s excited. He’s like, ‘you gotta play bass. I’ve got this track. I’m telling you, you got to get on it. It got your name all over it.’”
Raphael Saadiq also teased a track connected to their earlier supergroup, Linwood Rose, suggesting it could be featured on the new album. He described the music as “funky as hell” and noted that it has aged well.
D’Angelo’s Black Messiah debuted at No. 5 on the Billboard 200 and won the Grammy Award for Best R&B Album, lauded for its profound musicality and socio-political messages. With a new project underway, fans are eagerly anticipating what D’Angelo will deliver next.
