Canadian Government Orders TikTok To Shut Down Offices In The Country

TikTok is officially shutting down its operations in Canada.

According to reports, the country’s government ordered the social platform to close its local offices following a national security review of its Chinese parent company, ByteDance.

Canada’s Innovation Minister, Francois-Philippe Champagne, spoke about the matter yesterday (November 6th), stating:

“The government is taking action to address the specific national security risks related to ByteDance Ltd’s operations in Canada through the establishment of TikTok Technology Canada Inc.”

Adding:

“The decision was based on the information and evidence collected over the course of the review and on the advice of Canada’s security and intelligence community and other government partners.”

The review was conducted after TikTok submitted a proposal last year to expand its operations in the country.

TikTok has stated that they plan to challenge the decision in court, arguing:

1. “Shutting down TikTok’s Canadian offices and destroying hundreds of well-paying local jobs is not in anyone’s best interest, and today’s shutdown order will do just that.”

Reports note that Canada banned the app from government devices in 2023. Users in the country will still have full access to the platform.
