Interview Of Yasiin Bey Calling Drake ‘Pop’ Resurfaces Amid Rapper Taking Legal Action Over Claims UMG & Spotify Used Unfair Practices To Promote Kendrick’s ‘Not Like Us’
A video clip of Yasiin Bey (formerly Mos Def) calling Drake “pop” has resurfaced amid the Canadian rap star’s recent legal filings against UMG and Spotify.
In the January interview, Yasiin spoke with Recho Omondi on an episode of The Cutting Room Floor where he was asked if Drake should be considered a hip-hop artist. Answering truthfully, Yasiin Bey explained why he’d classify Drake as more pop than hip-hop.
Yasiin’s remarks are once again being discussed as social media users comment on Drake’s pre-action filings against his own label, Universal Music Group. He accused UMG and Spotify of conspiring to “artificially inflate” the popularity of Kendrick’s diss record.
In a second filing, he also accused UMG of defamation.
Kendrick’s diss record broke streaming numbers when it dropped at the height of the rapper’s beef over the summer, claiming the #1 spot on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart.
