Department Of Justice Rules Memphis Police Department Uses Excessive Force & Racial Discrimination
A U.S. Department of Justice investigation into the Memphis Police Department found excessive use of force and racial discrimination against Black people, following the fatal beating of Tyre Nichols during a 2023 traffic stop.
The report, released Wednesday, concluded that Memphis officers frequently violate citizens’ rights. “The people of Memphis deserve a police department that protects their civil rights and fosters trust,” said Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke.
The city responded by stating it would not agree to federal oversight until it has a chance to review and challenge the findings.
