Tyre Sampson’s Family Awarded $310 Million Settlement After Fatal Amusement Park Fall
Update: The family of Tyre Sampson, a 14-year-old who tragically passed away after falling from a Florida amusement park ride, has been awarded $310 million in a wrongful death lawsuit. The verdict, announced Thursday in an Orlando courthouse, concluded a nearly three-year legal battle.
Tyre Sampson’s parents, Mekia Dodd and Yarnell Sampson, were awarded $155 million each from Austrian ride manufacturer Funtime Handels. “This $310 million verdict sends a great message for accountability,” said family attorney Ben Crump, as reported by Fox 35 Orlando.

Tyre Sampson, a high school football standout, lost his life on March 24, 2022, while riding the Orlando FreeFall at ICON Park.

Despite being over the ride’s 287-pound weight limit, park staff manually adjusted his seat to allow him to ride. The 430-foot drop tower tilts riders forward before a high-speed descent, during which Sampson fell more than 200 feet.

Funtime Handels, criticized for not appearing in court, faced backlash from the family for its lack of accountability. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the Sampson family as they continue to grieve.
