Starbucks to End Open-Door Policy on January 27, Customers Will Need to Buy Something to Hang Out in Stores
Starbucks is making a change that will have customers rethinking their next visit. On Monday, January 13, the coffeehouse giant revealed a new step in its “Back to Starbucks” strategy aimed at making cafes more “welcoming” but only to paying customers.

Starting January 27, customers will need to make a purchase and follow a new code of conduct to use the café’s restrooms or sit down to chat. The company stated, “We want to ensure our spaces are prioritized for use by our customers.”

The updated guidelines, referred to as the “Coffeehouse Code of Conduct,” are in line with common practices in many retail spaces. Starbucks added, “It is designed to provide clarity that our spaces, including our cafes, patios, and restrooms, are for use by customers and partners.”

This shift has generated mixed reactions from customers. While some support the move to create a more focused environment for paying customers, others feel it could make the cafes less accessible for individuals who previously used the space for studying or meeting up without purchasing.

The policy change also comes amid broader changes in how retailers and businesses are rethinking their public spaces.
