24 States Sue To Block Donald Trump’s Executive Order On Birthright Citizenship
Attorneys general from 24 states filed lawsuits Tuesday to block President Donald Trump‘s executive order denying U.S. citizenship to children born to undocumented immigrants.
The order, signed at the start of Donald Trump’s second term, challenges over a century of legal precedent under the 14th Amendment, which guarantees birthright citizenship. The lawsuits, filed in Massachusetts and Washington state, argue the president lacks authority to alter constitutional rights, labeling the order “extraordinary and extreme.”
California Attorney General Rob Bonta warned the move could strip citizenship from over 20,000 children annually in his state. Critics, including legal experts, predict courts will likely strike down the order, citing the executive branch’s inability to unilaterally redefine constitutional guarantees.
Supporters of the lawsuits emphasize defending constitutional law and warn of broader implications, including rendering some newborns stateless.
The order, which takes effect in 30 days, sets the stage for a prolonged legal battle over immigration policy.
