Their latest collaboration, “Sinners,” an original R-rated vampire thriller, has taken a commanding lead at the box office, landing #1 its opening weekend and raking in $45.6 million domestically.
Reportedly, this marks the biggest debut for an original film since Jordan Peele’s “Us” premiered with $71 million in 2019, a significant feat in the post-Covid era of movie going.

Set in the Jim Crow-era Mississippi Delta, “Sinners” follows twin brothers, both portrayed by Jordan, who return home to open a juke joint, only to confront a sinister vampire threat. The film’s unique blend of horror, history, and cultural commentary has resonated with audiences, earning it a 98% score on Rotten Tomatoes and an “A” CinemaScore .
Internationally, Sinners added $15.4 million from 71 markets, bringing its global total to approximately $61 million . While Warner Bros. invested a hefty $90 million in production and an additional $60 million in marketing, the film’s strong opening suggests a promising path toward profitability.
Beyond its box office success, “Sinners” signifies a triumph for original storytelling in an industry often dominated by franchises. Coogler’s unique deal with Warner Bros.—granting him a share of the film’s gross revenue and future ownership rights after 25 years—highlights a significant shift toward creative control and Black ownership in Hollywood .
