Fans Shocked After The Simpsons’ Kills Off Marge In Season Finale…But There’s A Twist
The Simpsons surprised viewers by showing Marge Simpson’s death in the season 36 finale, but it happened during a flash-forward 35 years into the future.
The episode “Estranger Things,” which aired May 18, revealed Bart, Lisa, and Maggie as adults living very different lives. Lisa becomes the NBA commissioner, Bart runs an unlicensed retirement home where their father Homer lives, and Marge’s death is shown in a brief funeral scene.
The episode did not explain how or why Marge died, but featured a heartfelt moment where Lisa reads a letter Marge wrote “to be opened after I pass.” In the letter, Marge says it is “very unlikely” she would die before Homer.

After some tension about Homer’s living situation, Bart and Lisa reunite and watch their childhood favorite, The Itchy & Scratchy Show. Marge appears, watching them from the clouds and says,
“I’m so happy my kids are close again.”
The biggest surprise was that Marge remarried in Heaven to Beatles drummer Ringo Starr. She tells him, “I’m just so glad that we’re allowed to marry different people in Heaven,” before sharing a kiss.
The storyline upset many fans who feel Marge’s death is a major loss to the show. However, most of the episode takes place many decades in the future. Unless the show decides to take a different direction, Marge will presumably return for Season 37.
