Trump Suggests Deporting U.S. Citizens Convicted Of Crimes: ‘Get Them The Hell Outta Here Too’
During a visit to a migrant detention center dubbed “Alligator Alcatraz” in Ochopee, Florida, Donald Trump again proposed deporting U.S. citizens who commit crimes.
“They’re not new to our country. They’re old to our country. Many of them were born in our country,” Trump said. “I think we ought to get them the hell outta here, too, if you want to know the truth.”
The comment follows a memo from Assistant Attorney General Brett Shumate advising U.S. attorneys to aggressively pursue denaturalization cases involving serious offenses like war crimes or human trafficking.
However, legal experts argue the idea is unconstitutional.
“An unrelated crime could not be the basis for denaturalizing and deporting somebody,” said UVA law professor Amanda Frost.
