Browns Rookie Shedeur Sanders Skips The ESPYs To Support Cleveland Families After Deadly Apartment Explosion
Shedeur Sanders was a no-show at the ESPYS, but for good reason.
Instead of attending the awards show in Los Angeles, the Cleveland Browns rookie hosted the Garden Valley Fun Fest in Cleveland to uplift residents of the Rainbow Terrace Apartments after a tragic fire and explosion took the life of one man and displaced over 40 families.
“When everything transpired, I was out of town, so I was like, ‘Nah, the first thing I do when I get back is definitely come to the community,’” Shedeur shared. “This is just off an Instagram DM. I didn’t really know about the situation; someone told me. I was like ‘Dang that’s crazy,’ and I just wanted a day for everybody to get out here and have some type of enjoyment, excitement, bring just the family atmosphere back.”

From free food trucks and haircuts to pickup football games with neighborhood kids, Shedeur was hands-on the entire day.
“Sending money and stuff, that’s easy. But you have to actually go out there and be in the flesh. I feel like that’s more impactful,” he said. “God told me to come out here, so I’m never going to question his word.”
Though he wasn’t at the ESPYs, Shedeur was still mentioned during comedian Shane Gillis’ opening monologue, which referenced his jersey retirement at Colorado.
