Laila Ali On Claressa Shields’ Challenge To A Fight: ‘I Haven’t Responded Purposely Because That’s Not My Focus, I Call The Shots’
Laila Ali is addressing fellow pro boxer Claressa Shields’ offer to get in the ring.
During an interview with Good Day DC, Ali said she is getting multiple “flattering” offers to the tune of $15 million for boxing matches.
She also shut down rumors that she’s responded to Shields and clarified:
“I haven’t responded purposely because that’s not my focus right now. I call the shots. I do what I want to do, how I want to do it.”
Still, she added:
“I understand the excitement.”
She pointed out that it’s been 20 years since her last match, so she is “the only woman that can ask for that kind of money.” She added that her saying yes to a match can make a true difference in the attention surrounding women’s boxing and inspire others.
“That’s something to think about,” she said, adding, “But it doesn’t mean that I’m necessarily going to do it.”
She noted that she’s a mother, wife and owner of a lifestyle brand, so it’s a lot to consider if she will undergo training for a fight.
