Shonda Rhimes Says Trump’s Influence Has Sparked ‘Self-Censoring’ In Hollywood: ‘It Definitely Feels That Way’
Shonda Rhimes voiced concern over the entertainment industry’s shifting climate during Donald Trump’s second term, suggesting that self-censorship is becoming increasingly common among major networks.
Speaking at the Edinburgh TV Festival, Rhimes addressed the recent decisions by Paramount and Disney to settle lawsuits with Trump. “It definitely feels that way to a lot of people, that there is self-censoring going on,” she said.
Despite the atmosphere, Rhimes insisted her creative freedom remains intact. “I still have the power to make the shows that matter to me,” she said.
She also reflected on leaving the Kennedy Center board after Trump appointed himself chairman, explaining, “In my mind, it wasn’t a board anymore.”
On Elon Musk’s Twitter takeover, Rhimes said, “I walked away and I’m not paying attention anymore.” Addressing claims that *Bridgerton* is “woke,” she replied, “That’s so cute… how people react and take in the show is none of my business.”
Rhimes recounted her rise in the industry, stating, “I was nobody’s nepo baby.” She emphasized storytelling over algorithms: “Tell a good story, that’s what we should be looking for.”
“Bridgerton” has become Netflix’s second biggest franchise, and Rhimes hopes to extend it through Season 8.
“I’m going to tell stories as long as I want to tell stories,” she concluded.
Is Shonda speaking facts about Hollywood being more censored to stay in Trump’s good graces?
