Mississippi Woman Fatally Sh**ts Research Monkey That Escaped After A Truck Overturned, Says She Feared For Her Children’s Safety
One of the missing research monkeys has been located.
A homeowner in #Mississippi fatally sh*t one of the #rhesusmonkeys that escaped after a truck carrying 21 of them overturned on Interstate 59 near Heidelberg. The woman, 35-year-old Jessica Bond Ferguson, said she feared for her five children’s safety after her 16-year-old son spotted the monkey in their yard early Sunday morning (Nov.2). “I did what any other mother would do to protect her children,” Ferguson told the Associated Press. “I sh*t at it and it just stood there, and I sh*t again, and he backed up and that’s when he fell.”
The escaped monkeys, which were being transported for biomedical research, had triggered safety concerns after the truck crash. Initially, the animals were believed to carry diseases, though #TulaneUniversity later confirmed they had not been exposed to any infectious agent. Despite being deemed disease-free, the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks noted that the species is “known to be aggressive.”
Out of the 21 monkeys, 13 were taken from the accident scene and arrived at their original destination last week. Of the eight monkeys that were ejected from their cages, five were killed in the hunt for them and three remained on the loose before Sunday.
