Trump Just Blocked States From Regulating Al + Critics Say It’s A ‘Con’

Donald Trump moved to centralize control over artificial intelligence policy on Thursday, signing an executive order that blocks states from enforcing their own AI guardrails.

The measure, announced in the Oval Office, aims to prevent what the administration calls a “patchwork of conflicting rules” that could slow down innovation.

White House aide Will Scharf said the order ensures AI operates “within a single national framework… as opposed to being subject to state level regulation that could potentially cripple the industry.” David Sacks, Trump’s newly appointed crypto and AI czar, added that the move will help the administration “push back on the most onerous and excessive state regulations.”

But not everyone agrees. California Gov. Gavin Newsom, who advanced several AI safety and transparency laws earlier this year, blasted the executive order, saying, “President Trump and David Sacks aren’t making policy — they’re running a con.”

Was this a bad idea?
