Condolences: Cambridge University’s Youngest Black Professor, Jason Arday, Found De@d At 41, Days After Resigning Amid Plagiarism Controversy
Very sad news. Jason Arday, who made history as the youngest Black professor ever appointed at the University of Cambridge, has d*ed at the age of 41.
According to reports, Arday was found unresponsive at an address in Battersea, south London, on Friday (Aug. 14). Metropolitan Police said officers responded after being contacted by the London Ambulance Service, and he was pronounced de@d at the scene. His de@th is being treated as unexpected but not suspicious.
News of Arday’s de@th comes just nine days after he resigned from his positions at Cambridge University and Jesus College amid controversy surrounding allegations of plagiarism and questions about his academic record. Arday denied deliberately plagiarizing others’ work but acknowledged making academic errors. In announcing his resignation, he said the “relentless accusations, speculation and public commentary” had taken a significant toll on him and those close to him.
Arday joined Cambridge as a professor of sociology of education in 2023, becoming the university’s youngest Black professor at 37. His journey attracted widespread attention after he shared that he was nonverbal as a child and did not learn to read and write until later than most children. He ultimately earned a Ph.D. and built a career focused on education, race and inequality.
Cambridge University said it was “desperately saddened” by Arday’s death and extended condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and students. Prior to his death, the university had announced plans for an independent review into the circumstances surrounding his appointment.
