Comedian Aries Spears Admits He Doesn’t See The Hype Around Standup Icon Bernie Mac: ‘I Just Don’t Get It’

Aries Spears is stirring debate after admitting he has never fully understood the hype surrounding Bernie Mac, despite the late comedian’s legendary status in Black comedy circles.

During an appearance on “Live From The Green Room,” Spears named Mac when asked which celebrated comedians never connected with him.

“I just don’t get it,” Spears said. “The voice makes you lose. It’s hard for me to buy into the jokes ’cause I’m so caught in the—”

Spears compared Mac’s delivery to the muffled adults in “Peanuts,” arguing that the comedian’s distinctive voice sometimes distracted him from the actual material.

Spears acknowledged his opinion would likely upset fans, calling his choices “blasphemous by the Black community because we hold these people and these institutions to such high regard.”

Still, he insisted the criticism was about personal taste, not disrespect.

“It’s an opinion. Why can’t I have an opinion?” Spears said. “Just because it goes against the grain, it’s viewed as hatred.”

Mac, who passed away in 2008 at age 50, became a comedy icon through “Def Comedy Jam,” “The Original Kings of Comedy,” “The Bernie Mac Show,” and a successful Hollywood film career.
