Brittney Griner’s Estranged Wife Cherelle Seeks Financial Support, Says She Can’t Cover Monthly Bills Without Help

Cherelle Griner says the financial gap between her and estranged wife Brittney Griner has left her needing continued support as their divorce moves forward.

According to court documents, Cherelle filed a response to Brittney’s divorce petition following eight years of marriage. She listed their wedding date as June 18, 2018, and said they separated on July 24, 2026.

In the filing, Cherelle described their marriage as “irretrievably broken with no hope for reconciliation.”

She is also seeking joint legal custody of their child, Bash Griner, while asking the court to determine physical custody and parenting time based on the child’s best interests.

Money is also becoming a major issue in the split.

Cherelle is requesting financial support and wants the court to consider the difference between her income and Brittney’s earnings. Brittney currently plays for the WNBA’s Connecticut Sun and reportedly signed a one-year deal worth more than $1 million.

Cherelle claims there is a “substantial disparity” between their incomes and says she is “unable to meet her reasonable financial needs on a monthly basis without continued support.”

Cherelle became widely known during Brittney’s detention in Russia, when she publicly pushed U.S. officials to secure the basketball star’s release. Brittney returned to the United States in December 2022 following a prisoner exchange.

The couple’s divorce proceedings remain ongoing, with the court still expected to address financial support, custody, parenting time and other issues connected to the end of their marriage.
