[Photos] LeToya Luckett Hits DC for ‘Girls Inspire Summit’

If there’s one thing we love, it’s when celebs and community leaders give back. Recently, The Society For Girls, Inc held its first Girls Inspire Summit at Washington, DC’s Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library.

The all-day girls event included a panel discussion about the negative images in the media (with the emphasis on reality TV), the pressure of being a role model, personal self-esteem issues, the ugly side of the entertainment industry and personal career testimonies. Panelists included R&B artist, LeToya Luckett, SVP of PR at TV One, Monica Neal, Danella Sealock, traffic reporter of NBC 4 Washington, 93.9 WKYS'(DC) Angie Ange, and host Janaye Ingram, DC Bureau Chief of the National Action Network. On what motivated her participation, LeToya explained:
‘When it comes to events like this, I get excited. I think men need it too. I think there needs to be more events like this, especially for the youth. They didn’t have those posiitve role models. We had the Bill Cosby’s, we had these great shows that illustrated family and they became our role models at some point. So today, is very important.’
Danella explained similar sentiments:
Today’s event is definitely important to me because I could remember (when I was younger) where we would have professional people come into my journalism class. And it’s cool to see people in the business, actually giving advice.
The event also included a vision board presentation by Logo 4 Life founder, Karen Quarles. The girls identifed all the things that would stop them from reaching their goals, and then disposed of the paper, instilling in them that nothing can get in the way of diligently reaching their goals and pursuing their dreams. Shantelle Dockett, founder of The Society for Girls, Inc. ended the event by adding,
“We are so grateful to our wonderful panelists and hosts as well as to all of the girls who came out to the 2012 Girls Inspire Summit. We hope all attendees were truly inspired.”
