R. Kelly On Trey Songz, “He Needs to Humble Himself.” + Announces Next Album, “Black Panties”

R. Kelly recently stopped by 107.5 WGCI’s Morning Riot radio show in Chicago to answer a few questions about his surgery, music, and artists Trey Songz and Chris Brown. Here’s what he had to say.

On the medical issues that he had with his throat:

“It was really scary. At the end of the Love Letter Tour, towards the end, I started feeling it. I thought I had a cold, but, man, I had like a cyst as big as a golf ball on my tonsils. The doctor’s though, they cut it out, they took care of me really good. I can’t imagine [what I would do if I couldn’t sing anymore]. There’s nothing out there that I can imagine R. Kelly doing other than singing.”

On His New Music:

“I just did the whole ‘Love Letter’ joint and people are thinking ‘oh, that’s the way he’s going now.’ But that was just the moment in time, just like ‘Ignition’ and ‘Bump and Grind.’ ‘Black Panties’ (his first solo album) is the new 12-Play (his next album). The first single is called ’10 Minutes.’”

His Greatest Song:

“I would say [my greatest song is] ‘Seems Like You’re Ready.’ That’s my personal favorite. It’s as if I didn’t even do it; when I listen to it I don’t even feel like that’s me. There were a few females I was thinking about [when I wrote that song].”

On Trey Songz Throwing Shots At Him:

“I was pretty numb. I don’t feel those type of things. It’s like I’m bulletproof when it comes to beef. I don’t deal with beef, I love steak.”

(FYI in 2009 Trey released a song he called Death Of Kellz (D.O.K), over Jay-Z’s Death Of Autotune beat. Apparently Trey felt it was wrong for R.Kelly to conform to the auto-tune trend and use it in his music.)

On Which Young R&B Artist Is Next To Take His Crown:

“I know Trey Songz is a guy that if he keeps with the hits and he humbles himself a little bit more, he will definitely be one of the runners up. Chris Brown is already there because he’s a humble guy. He used to come to my studio when he was 13, 14, 15 and 16. I used to lecture him all the time. I have the utmost respect for Chris Brown, my hat goes off to him because he got back in the studio, did what he was supposed to do, and bounced back.”
