Aretha Franklin Pops Slick On Kathie Lee For Calling Her Too Old
Legendary singer Aretha Franklin fires back at Today Show hosts Kathie Lee Gifford and Hoda Hotb for popping slick about her not being a fan of flying and being too old to host American Idol. In but so many words, Gifford inferred that new generations is unaware of who Aretha Franklin is or anything about her music. Gifford says,
“If they are looking for a younger demographic, there are a lot of kids out there (who) actually don’t know who Aretha Franklin is. It’s sad, but they don’t.”
It was also noted that she does not like to fly so there may be a problem with her showing up to the audition part of the Idol process. Shortly after hearing this, Franklin shot an email over to CNN defending herself. Franklin wrote,
“While I enjoy Kathie Lee and Hoda daily, her assessment is totally wrong! I’ve been to California from Detroit four times this year and Florida. I go wherever I choose to go comfortably on my custom bus. My audience and fans span the age of eight to 90! And are multi-ethnic, and I am very well known to young adults, tweens and teens. Their parents play my music and I take care of my business whenever I sign on the dotted line. I’m surprised Kathie Lee did not research my worldwide celebrity audience! She’s usually right on top of things with a great sense of humor, but she’s totally wrong this time. She should research me before she speaks about me. I’m sure she thought she was right; still enjoy Hoda and Kathie Lee!”

She’s old! I love Aretha Franklin, but I’m not checking for her.
But she’s so right! And at the end of the day American Idol has legends on the show year after year…and the age groups on the show always seemed be honored to work with them, so whats wrong with a legend being a judge? Her generation of music will never go out of style!
And even if they don’t know who she was what does that have to do with her being a judge. I sure didn’t know who Randy Jackson was lol
How can you NOT hail & respect the QUEEN of SOUL. Her career is legendary and it crosses all ages and various music genres. Her career wasn’t built on looks, gimmicks, fads, music videos and internet popularity. Every female soul, R&B, jazz and gospel artist for the last 50 years can trace their “musical lineage back to Aretha Franklin. In fact (in my opinion) Aretha, Patti & Chaka LAID the foundation (respect to Gladys & Diana too) for every female artist this side of the 21st century. Who better can judge the future singers than someone who has seen & done it all. BOW DOWN!!!!!
While I do agree that Aretha would have no problem being a judge of the American Idol talent, what Hoda said does have some validity. It’s great that Aretha has a custom bus, however sometimes tv shows have a tight schedule, so can they really afford to wait a day or two for Aretha’s bus to arrive at a destination when you can fly there in a couple hours. Yes, her music is known worldwide but has she done concerts overseas and capitalized on her international notoriety? If she has, I stand corrected and no it wasn’t/isn’t necessary for her to travel overseas to be successful. She has proven that many times over. The real crux of the matter is, Aretha has always had a problem with ANY kind of public criticism, even a little bit. She’s always so quick to want to rip somebody a new “a”hole. What these two ladies said obviously struck a nerve with her, so maybe there’s some truth in their words. However I would reiterate, Aretha it’s Kathy Lee and Hoda for goodness sake…THEY are not that serious in the grand scheme of things. Next time show’em rather than tell them why you mad.
