Last night, the fashion world converged for the annual Costume Institute gala at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art. Affectionately referred to as the Met Gala, the theme of this year’s Costume Institute exhibit, which opens to the public on Thursday was, “Charles James: Beyond Fashion.”
James, who died in 1978, was a mid-20th century designer who specialized in spectacular, sculptured gowns made with intricate draping techniques. It’s the inaugural exhibit of the new, $40 million Anna Wintour Costume Center, named for the Vogue editor.
Anna Wintour wore multi-colored Chanel couture, actress Sarah Jessica Parker wore Oscar de la Renta, Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o wore a beaded and feathered Prada overlay in bright green ensemble, Jay Z opted for a white tuxedo jacket by Givenchy along with Beyonce who also wore Givenchy, Kim Kardashian rocked a blue Lanvin dress with a very high slit in front, Rihanna wore a midriff-baring McCartney design and Zoe Saldana wore a Michael Kors dress.
