She said that Viacom broadcasted false and defamatory accusations knowing they were false. Further, she said that contrary to what the film showed, she never controlled TLC’s lawyers and always paid the girls what they were due.
So what’s the latest? theJasmineBRAND.com has learned exclusively that this week, Viacom fired back at the allegations they defamed Reid. In the docs they state that based on their knowledge, Reid did have control over TLC’s lawyers and withheld information from the band in regards to their contract. The network also says that the record label did not provide the girls with their contracts unlike Pebbles allegation they did.
They also accuse Pebbles of turning down merchandise deals for the girls, despite her accusation TLC had 100% control over such things.
As for Pebbles stating she advanced money to the girls they say,
any expenses Reid purportedly advanced on behalf of TLC were deducted from TLC’s share of royalties as all such royalties flowed directly through the hands of Reid, Pebbitone, and LaFace, who controlled the source and payment of the group’s royalties.
They also admit they did not publish a public retraction per Pebbles request, because they do, “not believe that the movie was false and defamatory and continued to promote and re-telecast the TLC movie”.
The network shoots down the allegation that they willfully broadcast accusations knowing they were false. Viacom explains that the film is a docudrama and distills real life events over a decade into 117 minutes.
They are asking the 40 MILLION lawsuit be dismissed due to the events in the film being true or substantially true, the film is protected by the first amendment, some of the accusations in the film are opinions made by
