Kevin Hart Laughs His A** to the Box Office Bank

Stand-up comedian, Kevin Hart, is laughing this weekend and it damn sure has nothing to do with pain. His new movie, “Kevin Hart: Laugh at my Pain” opened September 9th in 99 theaters and has already garnered $2 million. This was shocking to movie critics, as stand-up comedies don’t usually do so well on the big screen. Jeff Clanagan, chief executive of the independent production company, Codeblack Entertainment, produced the movie on a budget of $750,000 and distributed it domestically to AMC theaters. He credits the success and publicity of the movie to the general public as the majority of the word-of-mouth spread via facebook and twitter where Hart has over 2 million followers.
He adds,
“It’s a lot easier to reach your target audience these days, on facebook we just asked our fans, ‘Hey we’re gonna expand the movie, what market are you in?’ And we had 6,000 responses in an hour that showed me for instance, that we need to go to places like Boston next.”
The film consists mostly of footage taken during one of Kevin Hart’s shows, a brief documentary-style segment of the comedian in his hometown of Philadelphia, and a short action spoof of the movie “Reservoir Dogs.” If you checked the movie out this weekend, please share your thoughts.
