What About Black Models?
Most of us that enjoy a bit of fashion fell in love with The Black Issue of Vogue Italia. And although some may think we’ve beaten this topic to death, the more shit we talk, the more folks will at least begin to dialogue on exactly what we define as ‘beauty’, what sells, and why.
Vogue’s Franca Sozzani discusses the lack of black models in the international fashion industry below.
“It sounds impossible that in our globalized world we are still thinking about color and nationality. Enough with stereotypes: for instance to think that white models sell more. It’s not true anymore. The important thing is beauty, and to each its own. This way each reader can find what they need.”
“This year there were a lot of black models on the runways. One for each show, Prada, Marc Jacobs, Yves Saint Laurent, Balenciaga, Miu Miu, Missoni, Dior, Pucci, Burberry, Gianfranco Ferrè, Valentino and many more. Lanvin had a group of eight nonetheless. It’s a good omen. You also notice it in magazines.”
