Concert Recap: Lil Wayne’s I Am Still Music Concert + Nicki Minaj, Rick Ross & Travis Barker

If you missed Lil Wayne’s I Am Music Tour, in Washington, DC, April 3rd, here’s the recap–compliments of Yosh.

The show started on time (7:00 p.m.) and Porcelain Black performed as the opening act. She shared her new video, “This Is What Rock N Roll Looks Like” prior to hitting the stage. I never knew who this chick was prior to the concert, but with Lil Wayne grooming her, she’s sure to make a huge impact on the rock/pop scene. The 25-year-old glam rocker, who describes her music as a mix between Marilyn Manson and Britney Spears, was serving all types of Lady Gaga! Her hair was died half jet black and half platinum blonde and she rocked a Cher looking sheer cat suit, a thong and boots. She performed 2 other songs and I was tapping my foot the entire performance!

The lights got brighter as they prepared for the next performer. Now from the construction of the set, which was a huge colorful radio, I had no idea who was next. Once the set was complete, DJ Mixmaster Mike took the stage and started getting the crowd hype. I was aware that he is the DJ for the Beastie Boys and Yelawolf, but neither were scheduled to perform. Until my bubble burst wide open! TRAVIS BARKER TOOK THE STAGE!!! The DJ was on the left side of the radio and Travis was on the other side. He performed songs off of his new album “Give the Drummer Some.” He was amazing on the drums, plus he brought Yelawolf on stage….I damn near died!!!!

The next scene was being set up for Rick Ross, just a huge ass promotional poster with Maybach Music Group imagery. Of course to me, Travis Barker started the concert, but you could tell that everyone had the notion that “ok, now the concert is starting.” With all the pyrotechnics, gun shots and repeated playing of the voice-over “Maybach Music,” Rick Ross did this little skipping-diddy-bop on stage and opened with “MC Hammer.” Concertgoers went CRAZY (liquor showers, clouds of smoke)! Sporting a tan jacket/pant set and black tee, he performed all of his big hits including “Hustlin,” “9 Piece,” “Aston Martin Music,” “BMF,” and for the ladies “Here I Am.” Of course, he brought out Wale (who performed “Pretty Girls” and “No Hands”), along with Meek Millz.  Ricky finished the set with “Super High” and his verse from the “Deuces Remix.”

With Rick Ross out of the way (no sarcasm included), I assumed Nicki Minaj would be next. To my surprise, Lil Wayne hit the stage and ripped the Verizon Center open by performing, “I’m Goin In.” He jumped up, with firing exploding from both sides of the stage and his show began. After performing his verse from “Look At Me Now,”  he stopped his performance for a public service announcement (PSA). To summarize he shared, that he believes in God, and without you (his fans), he ain’t shit. Just.Like.That. After his Public Service Announcement, “A-Milli” dropped hard as all hell. He also performed, “Right Above It”, “Sky’s is The Limit” (I actually grabbed my imaginary balls on this song), “Got Money” and “Go DJ”. He brought Mack Maine, Lil Twist (performed his new single “Love Affair”) and Shanell (Looking a hot ass mess in sequins and baby blue feathers) on stage as well. Wayne went through his mixtape, No Ceilings, before ceding the stage to Nicki Minaj.

Nicki Minaj took the stage with a scene of “Gladiator” playing on the LCD screen. Rising through a propelled entrance underneath the stage, she opened with “Roman’s Revenge.” Wearing a white and pink one-piece suit and her signature Bride of Frankenstein-like wig, Nicki transformed into her “Roman” persona. Then the infamous dildo came and pissed on everyone as she performed “Did it on em” (Sidebar: SB is an excellent hypeman!!!!).

My favorite part of her set, which is why I bought a damn ticket in the first place (Travis too), was her lap dance. Nicki invited some dude from Virginia named Mike. When the crowd learned that dude was from VA, they instantly booed him. After Nicki settled the crowd down, she gave Mike rules: “Keep your legs open, hands behind your back and keep your mouth shut.”. And then….there it was…..her ass in front of us as she winds to her verse on Sean Kingston’s “Letting Go”. After the lap dance, she performed “Right Thru Me”, “Fly” and “Save Me”, which she dedicated to the tsunami victims in Japan. She completed her set with verses from “Monster” “Super Bass” and “Moment 4 Life.”

Lil Wayne returned to the stage and after a brief Rebirth set, brought out Mack Maine, Gutta Gutta, Jae Millz and Nicki Minaj to perform Bedrock. After the Young Money crew left the stage, Wayne took the opportunity to introduce Drake. Drake dispelled rumors and performed, Miss Me and Forever. To finish up his last set, he brought out Shanell (deep sighs) to sing the hooks on “Mrs. Officer”, “Lollipop” and “Prom Queen.”  During “Prom Queen.” This song holds a special place in my heart his performance of this song convinced me that Wayne was both a rapper and a rock artist. He even played the guitar during the song! Weezy ended the show by playing Harry Belafonte’s “Day-O” as a prelude to “6 Ft, 7 Ft.”, which led into him bringing out Corey Gunz, Young Money’s latest signee, Cory Gunz.

Overall, it was an excellent concert. It had a variety of artists, started on time and the atmosphere was similar to a dope party—on musical steroids. I suggest you check it out; it’s worth every penny. Photos, compliments of Anthony Tilghman.
