Hustle Harder: Harold Camping Makes More than $75M off ‘End of the World’ Campaign
Well, it looks like if you live in the United States, you’ve made it. Today, May 21st was supposed to be the second coming of Jesus, or so-called Judgment Day. According to Harold Camping, founder of Family Radio, a massive earthquake is supposed to take place today, introducing a five month period of catastrophes before the world completely ends in October. Technically, the day hasn’t ended, so maybe there’s still a chance that sh*t’s going down.
Nonetheless, what is most intriguing about this story is the money that Camping and his devoted followers have brought in. Camping’s organization, Family Radio, has received $80 million in contributions between 2005 and 2009. Established in 1958, Family Radio is a nonprofit Christian radio network based in Oakland, Calif. with about 65 stations across the country. The IRS claims that Family Radio is almost entirely funded by donations, and had $18 million in contributions in 2009. What’s pretty dope of dude is his ability to continue to predict stuff that doesn’t happen, but still bring in money. In 1994, Camping also predicted that the world would end. Not sure why folks or his cult followers believe him this go ’round, but I certainly respect the man’s hustle. Peep the full story here.
