After 13 years of marriage, Kenny “Babyface” Edmonds and his second wife, Tracey Edmonds, shocked the entertainment world with the announcement the ‘picture perfect’ couple was divorcing. In a sit-down interview with Oprah Winfrey, for her ‘Next Chapter’ series, Edmonds recalls their divorce. He also gives his opinion on Tracey’s now ex-boyfriend (Eddie Murphy, who she was once engaged to) and her new boyfriend, former NFL superstar Deion Sanders (early next year, he will star on a new OWN reality series Deion’s Family Playbook). Check out a few excerpts of their conversation.

On Tracey dating Eddie Murphy:

I didn’t think it was the best thing…I didn’t know Eddie…so, I said to Tracey, ‘It’s your decision..’ It wasn’t for me to step-in…but things happened the way they were supposed to happen.

On how he feels about Tracey dating Deion Sanders:
Deion’s a good guy…Deion did one thing for me…which I thought was the classiest thing in the world….I’ve given her my opinion on certain things….I knew Deion seemed like a nice guy…When he called me and said he didn’t want to meet my children until he sat down with me….so he [wanted to] know me before he met my children…I was in. Tracy is family, so I wanna make sure she’s good.

On why his marriage with Tracey ended:
I can’t imagine really being married to Tracy right now.
On the public thinking that he and Tracey had the ‘picture perfect’ marriage:
We wanted it to look like that. We felt responsible…the reality is that there was a connection that wasn’t really there. We loved each other but we weren’t really IN love with each other….It was more the idea of it falling apart…and me holding onto the image of what I thought we were…I don’t feel like we were supposed to be together forever…I’m okay with it because I think she’s okay….

I saw that interview and your headline makes it seem as if they never loved each other. Their relationship changed over time. They became best friends as opposed to a romantic couple. He loves Tracy and they are family. I think they are probably more like brother and sister now. I remember his first marriage, it did not survive the loss of their child. I love that Babyface was able to put Oprah in her place about Miley Cyrus and she knew that she was checked. He left her speechless. I thought he was great.

Great interview. I think Mr. Edmonds is the the one who is a class act. Loved his honesty, thought it was funny when he said he couldn’t imagine being married to Tracy right now! Nuff said… Again, very classy guy.

Thanks for posting this post. I’m undeniably frustrated with struggling to search out relevant and brilliant commentary on this subject. Everybody now goes to the very far extremes to either drive home their viewpoint that either: everyone else in the planet is wrong, or two that everyone but them does not really understand the situation. Many thank you for your succinct, applicable insight.
