PETA Reacts to Beyonce & Jay Z’s Temporary Vegan Diet + Couple Caught Food Hoppin’ In LA
The day before his 44th birthday, rapper Jay Z announced that he and his wife (Beyonce Knowles) were adopting a vegan lifestyle for 22 days. Inspired by a friend, Jay Z shared on his web site:
Psychologists have said it takes 21 days to make or break a habit. On the 22nd day, you’ve found the way. On December 3rd, one day before my 44th birthday I will embark on a 22 Days challenge to go completely vegan, or as I prefer to call it, plant-based!! This all began a few months back when a good friend and vegan challenged me to embrace a “plant-based breakfast” everyday. It was surprisingly easier on me than I thought…Why now? There’s something spiritual to me about it being my 44th birthday and the serendipity behind the number of days in this challenge; 22 (2+2=4) coupled with the fact that the challenge ends on Christmas day…It just feels right!
And as we predicted, PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) is pleased with their decision–even if it’s temporary.
The organization wrote:
PETA praises Jay Z and Beyoncé for getting animals off their plates for 22 days and hopes that this great spiritual exercise will open their eyes to the suffering of all animals—including the wonderful ones who are killed not for the table but for a coat, a belt, or a bag.
It’s only been a few days, but the couple has been spotted at a few vegan hot spots like Los Angeles’ Crossroads, Cafe Gratitude and Native Foods. Veganism has become a growing trend for Hollywood. Celebs like Bill Clinton, Mike Tyson (who reportedly lost 100 lbs after going vegan), Carrie Underwood, Ellen DeGeneres, Russell Brand and Usher (according to Mother Nature Network, be began the new diet in 2012) have incorporated the diet.
