This week, we shared that a celebrity boxing match, starring George Zimmerman was well underway. Spearheaded by Zimmerman, reportedly, he is scheduled to fight rapper DMX. Reportedly, the motivation behind the match is to help charity and support a good cause. Zimmerman explained:
A mutual friend put me in contact with Damon and provided me with an opportunity and motivation to get back in shape and continue with my weight loss goals and also be able to help a charity out.
Since the report, there’s been backlash from some who suggest that the fight is inappropriate and insensitive.
A petition titled, Stop George Zimmerman and Promoter Damon Feldman from using murder & racial hate in America for Profit, has been created. The petition reads:
Celebrity Boxing Promoter Damon Feldman & George Zimmerman are attempting to promote and profit off of racial tensions in America. Damon Feldman has been known for fixing fights and taking short cuts in the past in bypassing state requirements for fighters to obtain a license to box. Mr Feldmans past should be highly considered in this regard if Feldman is not going through the proper channels to ensure the safety of the participants it puts lives at risk. in addition the entire idea of this event is to use racial tensions to lure people in to purchase the event. this will only hurt America as it will continue to stir up racial tensions that have been on going in this nation for quite some time. No Promoter or Celebrity Boxer should ever be allowed to use racial tension to profit.
To date, the petition has over 11,000 signatures. Almost 90k signatures are needed. According to CNN, no contract has been signed, but a promoter is negotiating with DMX to fight him. DMX spokesman Domenick Nati told CNN Wednesday,
DMX has promised to ‘beat his ass,’ but no contract or paperwork has been signed or agreed to yet.
