The memorial service for poet and author Maya Angelou took place, Saturday (June 7th). The private ceremony was held at Wake Forest.
Former President Bill Clinton, Oprah Winfrey and Cicely Tyson joined first lady Michelle Obama as they gave remarks. Oprah, who was very close with Dr. Angelou, gave an inspiring speech (filled with a few tears) about how instrumental she was in her life.
Dr. Bobby Jones sang during the service, along with Bebe Winans and Pastor Marvin Winans.
Angelou died last week at her Winston-Salem home at age 86. She was known worldwide as a literary pioneer and civil rights champion. Watch the full memorial, along with Oprah’s remarks, on the next page.
