[Racist or Innocent Fun] Paula Deen’s Son Under Fire for Questionable ‘Jellyroll’ Photo
The Deen’s have landed in a bit of new controversy. This time, it doesn’t focus as much on Paula Deen, but her son, Jamie. A recent photo has a few folk scratching their heads. Last week, Jamie posted the photo above of his kissing an older African American woman. He jokingly tweeted it, with the caption
Don’t tell Brooke. #jellyroll #sugar
Brooke is his wife. Reportedly, the woman in the photo is Ineata “Jellyroll” Jones.
If her name sounds familiar, it’s because she has been at the center of accusations of racism surrounding the family. In 2013, The Columbus Dispatch claimed,
“\Deen used Jones for restaurant theater. At 11 a.m., when the doors opened at [her restaurant] Lady & Sons, she stood in front and rang an iron dinner bell.
Reportedly, Jones was also tasked with making hoecakes in view of customers, and according to the paper,
Deen wanted Jones to dress in an old-style Aunt Jemima outfit.
Jones denied any wrong doing by the Deen’s and only had positive things to say about the family. Paula Deen also denied the accusation. Reportedly, the term ‘jelly roll’ has racist connotations and was at one point in the past used as slang for African American female genitalia. Do you find this offensive or are people being overly sensitive? [Twitter, Radar Online, Gawker]
