[EXCLUSIVE] Jay Z Demands ‘Run This Town’ Lawsuit Be Dismissed
TufAmerica did not authorize the defendants’ reproduction, distribution or public performance of the audio recording ‘Run This Town’ in a music video or in the albums. Defendants did not have any right to reproduce, distribute or publicly perform samples of … Hook & Sling.
The company demanded damages for the alleged illegal sampling and also an injunction against Jay Z from continuing to distribute the song.
Then on September 9th, Jay Z fired back stating the, entire, misguided copyright infringement lawsuit is based on an alleged “sample” of the most fleeting one-syllable word – “oh” – in defendants’ sound recording entitled, “Run This Town”.
The rapper says that the music company,
apparently believes that it has a monopoly on the use of the word “oh” and that it can stop others from using this word in recorded form.
Jay Z explains that the company cannot copyright a word such as “oh”and he did not illegally sample the 1960’s song. He is demanding the entire lawsuit be dismissed and the company be awarded nothing.
