Mack Wilds On New Music, ‘Empire’ Speculation & Why ‘The Wire’ Was One of the Best Shows Ever Created [VIDEO]
The success of his single “Own It” and the new album:
We got some stuff! So, yeah, we got some stuff. We’ll talk about it off camera. I’m excited! I remember when I first got in the studio, I was nervous, I had everybody on my head like “how you gone top this one, what you gone do”, so I’m in there nervous, I’m striking out and after a while, I kinda found my stride and it’s like once I did one song and I tried to top that song, then I was like oh that song is good then I tried to top that song, I need a song like this, try to top that joint and it kept building to the point that we have about 30-40 records, now and I’m able to kinda cut through what we have and give the people a nice amount each time we dropping these EPs.
On New York being the muse behind his last album and if that will happen again:
I think New York is forever going to be a stable in my music, but this time I’m getting more deeper into me! I’m growing into a young man, ya know, situations that we go through, the feelings that we have, ya know, so there’s a lot of raging hormones on this project.”
His acting career and a possible role on Empire:
There’s a couple things that I’m working on even for myself things I’ve written that we’re placing right now. We’re in a really good place, but I’ve always been the guy that I don’t like to talk about nothing until the paint is dry, the ink is dry, and the checks are in my account. There’s definitely a couple things on the table, but as of now, I’m still out there looking and making sure I make the best move. Ever Wednesday, I get at least 40 tweets, like “yo, Mack Wilds should be on Empire”. It’s great, I appreciate it, it’s a great show. Lee Daniels is amazing and the cast is dope, Taraji P. Henson is always a stellar actress, me and Terrence, we’ve worked on Red Tails together, that’s like the big homie, so I would jump at that in a second.
I got a chance to do something similar on 90210, but I specifically told them I didn’t wanna be a singer, I thought it would be kinda corny of me to like I’m a singer on the show and I’m coming out as a singer, now, listen to my music, so I was definitely making sure that on 90210, that I was able to act and the music was separate even though my character was a musician, so it would probably be the same thing for Empire, I would love to jump in there and do something, but it would have to be something not so similar to myself something that could come off as corny, something that would be me purely acting.”
Being on “The Wire”:
I thank God for “The Wire”, honestly, because that opened the door for a long form visual entertainment, so television has become a bigger thing because of shows like “The Wire”, shows like “Mad Men”, “Sons of Anarchy”, so much great TV that’s out right now its amazing to see, you got your favorite actor and actresses on TV, now, you can catch em every week, it’s amazing. We’ve definitely gotten into a great place. Do I feel like I lucked out, nah, I praise God everyday because I was on what they consider sometimes one of the best shows created, it’s amazing.
They did the entire marathon around Christmas time or something like that and I just remember my Twitter was lit up! And you just going through Instagram and seeing pictures that people put up, screenshots and it was crazy it brought me back to when I was 16 and watching myself on TV for the first time or when Spike Lee came up to me for the first time and was like “yo, y’all kilt this” and us being young kids like what, so, it was amazing honestly — thank you guys for watching and sticking with us for so long. It’s crazy to think that you guys been rocking with me and listening to anything I’ve said since I was 15 years old, so cheers to y’all.
