VIBE Releases Special Eric ‘Eazy-E’ Wright Edition
Irv Gotti:
Eazy-E’s verse on [“All In The Same Gang”] is the illest verse to me because he’s like…’Eazy-E, the violent hero’. ‘Everyone else talking peace, but I ain’t gonna tell you that!’ When he was on [the original] Arsenio Hall [late night show] with the hockey mask on… Arsenio would ask him a question and Eazy would lean over to MC Ren, whisper something in his ear, and Ren would be like, ‘Eazy said…’ His persona was, ‘even though I’m not writing a lick of this sh**, I’m the one.’
Dr. Dre :
Keep in mind we weren’t serious about becoming superstars, or anything like that. We just wanted to be popular in our town.
DJ Yella:
We did what we wanted to do, and we didn’t let the FBI, MTV banning us, no radio play, nothing [stop us]. And the message behind the movie is young people, whatever you are: a painter, writer, whatever it is—if you got a passion for it, just do it; don’t let nothing stop you and don’t change it.
Sheena Lester (who once was XXL Magazine editor-in-chief in the late ‘90s):
Lester, who once helmed XXL Magazine as editor-in-chief in the late ‘90s and currently works as the Arts & Culture editor at Philly Weekly, fondly recalls that night hanging out with an upbeat and gracious Eazy, no doubt fueled by the early success of Bone. “He wasn’t on a celebrity trip,” she says. “He smoked everybody out [laughs]. He had folks in his car listening to new music. People were like, ‘I didn’t know Eazy was this cool…what the f**k?!’
Krayzie Bone:
I’m sitting at home watching MTV News and I hear, ‘Rapper Eazy-E has been diagnosed with having full blown AIDS.’ I’m like, ‘Get the f**k out of here!’ A week later Eazy passed away.
