CeeLo Green is a vault — meaning he knows how to keep a secret, especially when it comes to his personal life. This week, the singer revealed that he’s been engaged for a year. Green spilled the tea while filming a music video for his song “Work”, in which he revealed to PEOPLE that he had been engaged to longtime girlfriend Shani James for about a year. Why did he decide to keep a tight lip about his relationship status? He considers his private life ‘sacred’. He explains:

Truth be told, it’s not something we wanted to promote. We’re a collective power together because our private life is sacred.

The pair have been together for four years. And as to why he’s now telling the public, he says:

You know what, though? Maybe it’s time. Maybe it is time for the world to know that I have a very secure situation and a loving woman supporting me the entire way.
