Pepsi Pulls Kendall Jenner Ad: We missed the mark.
Pepsi Releases Statement
Update: On Wednesday (April 5th), Pepsi pulled its new ad after it was widely criticized for appearing to trivialize protests for social justice causes. The company said,
Pepsi was trying to project a global message of unity, peace and understanding. Clearly we missed the mark, and we apologize.
It said it was
removing the content and halting any further rollout.
Here’s the backstory: On Tuesday (April 4th), Pepsi addressed their new controversial ad starring their new spokesperson/Keeping Up With the Kardashians reality star, Kendall Jenner. In a statement, the company stated,
This is a global ad that reflects people from different walks of life coming together in a spirit of harmony, and we think that’s an important message to convey.
In a separate statement, Pepsi stated,
The creative showcases a moment of unity, and a point where multiple storylines converge in the final advert. It depicts various groups of people embracing a spontaneous moment, and showcasing Pepsi’s brand rallying cry to ‘Live For Now,’ in an exploration of what that truly means to live life unbounded, unfiltered and uninhibited.
As previously reported, the company has received backlash after some suggest the ad is culturally insensitive and blatantly appropriates the Black Lives Matter and other movements.
Kendall has yet to respond.
