Jay-Z’s Mother On Telling Son She’s A Lesbian: He started tearing…I was never ashamed.
In a new interview, Jay-Z’s mother, Gloria Carter, opens up about coming out to her famous son. She says,
I just finally started telling (Jay) who I was. Besides your mother, this is the person that I am. This is the life that I live.
She says that Jay-Z actually became emotional.
So my son started actually tearing. ‘Cause he’s like, ‘That had to be a horrible life, Ma’. I was like, ‘My life was never horrible. It was just different.’ So that made him want to do a song about it.
She continues,
I was never ashamed of me. In my family, it was something that was never discussed.
As to why she wanted to reveal her sexuality, she says:
I’m tired of all the mystery. I’m gonna give it to ‘em. I don’t have to worry about anybody wondering if I’m in the life or not, I’m gonna tell them. So now that I told you, what do you have to talk about? So now maybe you can focus on the phenomenal things I do, so focus on that…Now it’s time for me to be free.
Jay has also discussed the song ‘Smile’, that was inspired by his mother, explaining:
We had a beautiful conversation that led to me making that song and I didn’t have permission to make that song. When she first heard the song, she was like, ‘Absolutely not.’ I was like, ‘This is so important. So many people in the world are hiding. This will help them.’ That’s all I’ll say about that. That’s how we spoke about that song. I was just so happy of the person she’s becoming. Live your life, be who you are. One of my proudest songs. I love that song.
