Lil Rel Howery’s New Show “Rel” Was Inspired by His Real Life
In a new interview, actor/comedian Lil Rel Howery is opening up about his new show and upcoming film, Uncle Drew. Peep the excerpts below.
On the Fox network giving him a show:
Fox gave me a show. And it’s really funny. I’m very proud of it. It’s really funny!! I wrote it with Jerrod (Carmichael) and my friends Josh and Kevin.
On the process of the show:
Well everything happened pretty fast with our show. Like when I pitched in a room they like aight, will give you a pilot. It took longer after we turned it in. Like the taping night was insane, the crowd was into it, everybody was good. But it was just so much even from casting just a lot of little stuff.
On the concept:
Rel is loosely based on my life and more less towards my material. Just me being divorced, my wife just left and I end up finding out that she cheated on me with my barber and that’s what makes it funny. It’s just showing a man rebuild his life.
On comedian/actor Sinbad playing his father:
You know what I like about him man? He’s a legend but he like has this…this chill about him. He doesn’t thinks he’s better. He still thinks he just on the grind like the rest of us. He don’t look at himself like that stature of which I think was excited about putting him on the show and reintroducing the world.
On new movie “Uncle Drew”:
Yes I’m excited about Uncle Drew. My son plays little me which is crazy. But he is good. They kept picking these little kids that didn’t look like me and I was like no. I literally have a kid that looks exactly like me. The movie is based around my character really who you know has to find old Drew to help put together a team because I lost my team to my rival.
REL airs this September on Fox.
