The View’s Sunny Hostin Says She Was Called N-Word By Kids
‘The View’ Co-Host Sunny Hostin Details Her Brush With Racism
The View co-host Sunny Hostin proves that celebrity status doesn’t keep you exempt from unfair treatment. She recently detailed an incident where she faced racial prejudice – ironically, while celebrating Independence Day.
Hostin and her friends celebrated the holiday at a beachfront rental home on the Azurest enclave of Sag Harbor in Long Island, New York, an historically African-American area. She says:
We heard some kids on the beach, and they started yelling the n-word at us…they were yelling things like ‘This is America! We are patriots!’
She continued:
It was so shocking because in 12 years or more, nothing like that has ever happened to us. That beach has always been our safe haven.
Sunny and her friends eventually confronted the group about the incident, recording footage of the conversation on their phones. She says:
We engaged them and said, ‘Are you calling us the n-word? This is harassment,’ and they denied saying it – but they didn’t deny that it had been said.
Domestic violence and child homelessness awareness group, Safe Horizon, which Sunny is a noted board member of, tweeted their support for her speaking out against racism. They said:
On July 4th, our friend & board member @sunny endured racial harassment while celebrating with her family. As an org with anti-racist values, we are disgusted by these actions. We stand with @sunny & all people of color who have experienced racism & denounce it in all forms.
