Lauryn Hill Denies Stealing Music, Underpaying Musicians – You CAN’T Write For Me!
Lauryn Hill is addressing claims by the jazz pianist and producer Robert Glasper. In a previous interview, Robert alleged that Lauryn mistreated the musicians that played in her band and “stole music” for her 1998 album The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill. He also claimed that musicians were not fairly compensated.

The 43-year-old singer responded to these claims writing,
I’m confused as to why such a principled musician, who thought I ‘stole’ from his friends, would show up to work for me.
She adds,
You may be able to make suggestions, but you can’t write FOR me. I am the architect of my creative expression. These are my songs, musicians are brought in because of the masterful way that they play their instruments.
In terms of not fairly paying artists, she says that she has no “details or recollection” of cutting pay. She does note that she does have a standard when it comes to her artistry and her expectations.
Speaking in third person she says
Yes, ‘Ms Hill’ was absolutely a requirement. I was young, black and female. Not everyone can work for and give the appropriate respect to a person in that package and in charge. It was important, especially then, for that to be revealed early.
In terms of her being interpreted as being mean, she states,
I wouldn’t be the first black person accused of this. I don’t think of ’s skills as those of a hostess, but rather her relentless dedication to helping people who wanted out of an oppressive paradigm.
