Salim Akil’s Alleged Sexual Abuse Accuser Reached Out to Sexual Assault Activist Months Before Filing Lawsuit

What love is not is sexual abuse and physical violence. The plot thickens amid reports that Salim Akil – writer/producer for OWN’s “Love Is __,” husband of Mara Brock Akil – had a 10-years-long extra-marital affair in which domestic and sexual violence were involved. The alleged accuser is actress Amber Dixon Brenner.

We previously reported that Amber is suing Salim Akil for breach of contract. Her accusations state that he used portions of a script she submitted without acknowledging or paying her, and for the graphic abuse she allegedly endured at the hands of him. A tweet from June of this year of Amber’s has been found where she reached out to actress/sexual assault activist Rose McGowan. It appears Amber had been searching for resources to blow the whistle on her encounters with Salim Akil well before the lawsuits were publicized. Amber tweeted:

“@rosemcgowan How do traumatized men and women contact your organization? Many sisters and friends are curious about a means to tell their story, clarify their confusion, and out abusers of power in Hollywood and elsewhere.”

Rose McGowan didn’t appear to publicly respond. Amid the reports of her lawsuit, Amber’s Instagram profile is now private.

Amber Dixon Brenner is suing Salim Akil for an undisclosed amount in damages, emotional distress, and attorney fees. Salim has released a statement, calling her allegations false. [Click here for the latest].
