Yara Shahidi has officially upgraded her #goals status. The Grownish actress announced she is the next Barbie Role Model.
“I’m honored to be repping all the young ones as a Barbie Role Model,” she wrote when she shared the news via Instagram Wednesday morning.
“Let’s continue to inspire the next generation and each other. We need your voices and are watching you all Blossom and shine! #YouCanBeAnything #Barbie60”
Barbie rolled out the campaign as a nod to International Women’s Day, which is Friday March 8, and its 60th anniversary.
It released a statement on its website:
“We’re committed to highlighting empowering role models as a key part of the Dream Gap Project – our ongoing global initiative aimed at giving girls the resources and support they need to continue believing that they can be anything. By introducing girls to stories of women from all walks of life, they begin to see more opportunities for themselves.”
Shahidi is one of 20 other women who Barbie unveiled in its new Role Model campaigns on its website.
Naomi Osaka, who has been dubbed the number 1 female tennis player in the world, model and body activist Ashley Graham, iconic NASA mathematician and physicist Katherine Johnson, history-making principal ballerina Misty Copeland, gymnastics gold medalist Gabby Douglas, and director Ava Duvernay are other women who will be getting their own Barbie.
