Taylor Swift Says She Is ‘Grossed Out’ That Scooter Braun Bought The Masters To Her Music W/Out Her Knowing, Justin Bieber Says She’s ‘Crossing A Line’
Taylor Swift sent social media into a frenzy Sunday when she blasted Scooter Braun, who is the manager for heavy hitters like Kanye West, Ariana Grande and Tori Kelly. Swift was clearly upset after Braun bought her former label, Big Machine Records, as well as the rights to all of her music for $300 million from Scott Borchetta.
Swift wrote a lengthy letter on her Tumblr page about how heartbroken she was over the deal, especially because she says that she would have loved to own the masters herself.
She started with a now-deleted post from Bieber FaceTiming with West, who she clearly has had issues with in the past, and Braun. Bieber wrote the caption,
“Taylor Swift what up”
“For years I asked, pleaded for a chance to own my work. Instead I was given an opportunity to sign back up to Big Machine Records and ‘earn’ one album back at a time, one for every new one I turned in. I walked away because I knew once I signed that contract, Scott Borchetta would sell the label, thereby selling me and my future. I had to make the excruciating choice to leave behind my past. Music I wrote on my bedroom floor and videos I dreamed up and paid for from the money I earned playing in bars, then clubs, then arenas, then stadiums.”
She then said the purchase of her masters was just proof that Braun is a bully.
“Some fun facts about today’s news: I learned about Scooter Braun’s purchase of my masters as it was announced to the world. All I could think about was the incessant, manipulative bullying I’ve received at his hands for years.”
Shen went on to use that time Kim Kardashian West secretly recorded a conversation between Kanye and Swift to prove that Swift knew about Kanye mentioning her in a song. While Swift insisted she never gave Kanye the green light to mention her name, Kardashian ended up releasing it.
Swift added in her message,
“Now Scooter has stripped me of my life’s work, that I wasn’t given an opportunity to buy. Essentially, my musical legacy is about to lie in the hands of someone who tried to dismantle it.”
“This is my worst case scenario. This is what happens when you sign a deal at fifteen to someone for whom the term ‘loyalty’ is clearly just a contractual concept. And when that man says ‘Music has value’, he means its value is beholden to men who had no part in creating it.”
She ended with,
“When I left my masters in Scott’s hands, I made peace with the fact that eventually he would sell them. Never in my worst nightmares did I imagine the buyer would be Scooter. Any time Scott Borchetta has heard the words ‘Scooter Braun’ escape my lips, it was when I was either crying or trying not to. He knew what he was doing; they both did. Controlling a woman who didn’t want to be associated with them. In perpetuity. That means forever.”
“Thankfully, I am now signed to a label that believes I should own anything I create. Thankfully, I left my past in Scott’s hands and not my future. And hopefully, young artists or kids with musical dreams will read this and learn about how to better protect themselves in a negotiation. You deserve to own the art you make.”
“I will always be proud of my past work. But for a healthier option, Lover will be out August 23.”
Bieber was one of the first to respond to Swift and defend Braun. He also told fans to stop bullying Braun and called out Swift for “crossing a line” in her message against Braun.
“As the years have passed we haven’t crossed paths and gotten to communicate our differences, hurts or frustrations. So for you to take it to social media and get people to hate on scooter isn’t fair. What were you trying to accomplish by posting that blog? seems to me like it was to get sympathy u also knew that in posting that your fans would go and bully scooter. Anyway, One thing i know is both scooter and i love you. I feel like the only way to resolve conflict is through communication. So banter back and fourth online i dont believe solves anything. I’m sure Scooter and i would love to talk to you and resolve any conflict, pain or or any feelings that need to be addressed. Neither scooter or i have anything negative to say about you we truly want the best for you. I usually don’t rebuttal things like this but when you try and deface someone i loves character thats crossing a line..”
While Braun has stayed quiet, it didn’t take long for his wife, Yael Cohen Braun to respond. She said not only did Swift know about her masters, but Swift’s father was a shareholder and was told about the upcoming acquisition. Plus, Yael said Borchetta contacted Swift about the change as well. Yael then added that Swift has no room to talk about being a victim of bullying.
“The world watched you collect and drop friends like wilted flowers. My husband is anything but a bully, he’s spent his life standing up for people and causes he believes in… Don’t blame Kim because you were caught in a lie, it’s embarrassing I know – but adults own up to their mistakes.”
Demi Lovato and Swift’s BFF Todrick Hall also jumped in.
Meanwhile, Borchetta also pulled out receipts.
