Michelle Williams Wants You To Stop Mistaking Her For Emmy Winning Actress With The Same Name: Can’t You See I’m Black?

Whether speaking about the renowned actress or member of member of the history-making girl group, Destiny’s Child – the name Michelle Williams rings bells! But, apparently, the wrong woman is receiving social media notifications! The actress Michelle gave a rousing acceptance speech urging the industry to pay women of color fairly while receiving her “Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie.” But, the “Survivor”-singing Michelle is getting dragged for the speech on Instagram!

She gave this hilarious PSA on Instagram Live:

“Let’s get one thing clear: how come when y’all are tagging and congratulating a person – do y’all see that I’m Black? When you go to my profile or tag- or when you search for the Michelle Williams? I am Black! Okay? I ain’t mixed with nothin’. I ain’t mixed with Persian, Russian- I am Black! So I’m trying to figure out why in the world am I getting cursed out in my comments for Michelle Williams’ speech – which I thought was her truth. I thought it was awesome! I thought she was factual. I could be wrong! But, yeah – I just told this woman a few minutes ago on my Instagram. I was like, ‘I’m so sorry that my namesake upset you! But can’t you see that I’m Black?'”

In the actress’ speech, she told Emmy-goers:

“I see this as an acknowledgment of what is possible when a woman is trusted to discern her own needs, feel safe enough to voice them, and respected enough that they’ll be heard…The next time a woman — and especially a woman of color, because she stands to make 52 cents on the dollar compared to her white male counterparts — tells you what she needs in order to do her job, listen to her, believe her. Because one day, she might stand in front of you and say thank you for allowing her to succeed because of her workplace environment and not in spite of it.”
