Whitney Houston’s BFF Robyn Crawford Recalls Their Rumored Romance: We Wanted To Be Together … She Said We Couldn’t Be Physical Anymore
The best friend of late singer Whitney Houston has explained the nature of their relationship for the first time.
Robyn Crawford is setting the record straight after decades of speculation that she and Whitney Houston, who died in February 2012, were romantically involved.
Robyn Crawford took to her new memoir A Song For You: My Life With Whitney Houston to explain what was going on between them.
Via an excerpt from People, Crawford wrote,
“I’d come to the point where I felt the need to stand up for our friendship. And I felt an urgency to stand up and share the woman behind the incredible talent.”
She explained how she was 19 when she met then 16-year-old Whitney Houston in 1980. Both ladies worked as summer camp counselors in East Orange, NJ, and Crawford promised Houston,
“I’m going to look out for you.”
Crawford said she kept her promise for 20 years and added,
“We wanted to be together, and that meant just us.”
She revealed that Houston broke things off between them (at least when it came to their physical relationship), just after landing a deal with Clive Davis at Arista. Crawford explained how Houston gifted her with a slate blue Bible in 1982 as she told Crawford why they couldn’t be physical.
“She said we shouldn’t be physical anymore, because it would make our journey even more difficult. She said if people find out about us, they would use this against us and back in the ’80s that’s how it felt.”
She added,
“I kept it safe. I found comfort in my silence.”
Houston’s family, especially her mother Cissy Houston, was also very against any budding romance between Crawford and the singer, Crawford wrote.
“Whitney told me her mother said it wasn’t natural for two women to be that close, but we were that close. We never talked about labels, like lesbian or gay. We just lived our lives and I hoped it could go on that way forever.”
She added,
“Whitney knows I loved her and I know she loved me. We really meant everything to each other. We vowed to stand by each other.”
Crawford, who currently lives with her partner, talent agency exec Lisa Hintlemann, and two adopted children, said she hopes her book will give fans a look into the real Whitney.
“I wanted to lift her legacy, give her respect and share the story of who she was before the fame, and in that, to embrace our friendship.”
Rumors of Crawford and Whitney’s relationship were also addressed in the documentary Whitney: Can I Be Me?
Filmmaker Rudi Dolezal said,
“I think that Robyn was probably the only person at least I met who completely understood Whitney, and what Whitney was about. And I think that Whitney trusted Robyn 100 percent.”
Film writer Abby Samuels added,
“Robyn was the one who was keeping her together.”
Kevin Ammons, security personnel, also explained in the film,
“Robyn and Whitney were like twins. They were inseparable. They had a bond and Bobby Brown could never remove Robyn. He wanted to be the man in the relationship.”
