Zozibini Tunzi’s Miss Universe crowning made history in more ways than one. And she did it her way.
It was previously reported that Miss Universe, Miss America, Miss USA, and Miss Teen USA are all Black women, for the first time in history.

But that wasn’t the only first Zozibini Tunzi’s win saw.
Zozibini Tunzi is also the first to win Miss Universe rocking her natural afro-texture hair. Interestingly enough, she revealed recently that some people, even her closest friends, urged her to wear a wig during the competition.
She said during an interview with Insider,
“It was so strange because even a lot of people I knew, people that were my friends, were like, ‘Sis, we love you, but we’re just saying, maybe you should put on a wig or buy a weave.'”

She opened up about her natural hair journey and added,
“I decided, no, this is not worth it. I decided that I just want to go for a different look. I’m going to cut my hair and see how it looks from there. And I just remember looking into the mirror and loving it.”

So when it came time for her to compete for the coveted Miss Universe crown, she stuck with her natural locks.
“I was like, ‘No, you know what, I’m going to do it the way I am, because I’ve been with my natural hair for the past three years.’ I don’t see why I should change it just because I’m stepping into another platform.”
Fortunately for Tunzi, she was able to win the title with her natural hair and all!
