Gayle King Says Ivanka Trump Checked On Her During Kobe Bryant Controversy: “I Was Very Touched By That”
To say Gayle King received backlash during her Kobe Bryant controversy is an understatement. But while many, celebrities and fans alike, called out Gayle King for questioning Lisa Leslie about 2003 sexual assault allegations against the late NBA star, she also had many standing with her.
In fact, #IStandWithGayle was an ongoing hashtag on Twitter as many expressed their open support.
But some of the support she received wasn’t in public.
She told her best friend Oprah Winfrey that President Donald Trump’s daughter and senior advisor Ivanka Trump was one of the many people who reached out to her privately. She said:
“What surprised me is the people that came to reach out to me in unexpected places. Ivanka Trump, it’s not like I’m hanging out at The White House, but Ivanka Trump reached out to me to say, ‘Are you OK? I’m sorry that this is happening to you.’ I mean, I have to say I was very touched by that.”
She also revealed,
“Sean Spicer reached out to me! Who I don’t know at all!”
Sean Spicer is the former White House Press Secretary and White House Communications Director for Donald Trump.
Actress Katie Holmes and her 15-year-old daughter Suri Cruise sent her a box of cupcakes with the note,
“Katie & Suri. We’re thinking about you.”
Gayle King also said of the intense criticism,
“I have moved on. Is there a scab? Yeah. But I have moved on. I put on my game face and my big girl pants, because I never lost sight of who I was, what I believe I am, and my intention. I’ve never lost sight of that. But it certainly was a learning curve, and it was very painful.”
