Will Smith Says His Divorce To Sheree Zampino ‘Was The Worst Thing In My Adult Life, It Was The Ultimate Failure For Me’
Will Smith is opening up about his first marriage to Sheree Zampino and how their split impacted him as a dad.
On the Father’s Day episode of Red Table Talk, his now wife of 23 years, Jada Pinkett Smith invited Will Smith to discuss all aspects of fatherhood, including how his and Sheree Zampino’s split changed his thoughts on fatherhood.
Will Smith married Sheree Zampino in 1992 and had their son Willard Carroll “Trey” Smith III on November 11, 1992. The two divorced in 1995. Will then met his current wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, in 1994 which blossomed into a relationship in 1995. Will and Jada Pinkett Smith got married on New Year’s Eve of 1997 and have two children together, Jaden, 21, and Willow, 19.
Jada starts their conversation with,
“One interesting concept that you’ve brought up quite a bit in regards to Trey and divorce and the idea being that just because a man might not be the best husband doesn’t mean he’s not a good father.”
Will responds,
“With Sheree and with Trey that was a really difficult time. Divorce was the worst thing in my adult life. Divorce was the ultimate failure for me. I’ve been hurt a lot in my adult life but I don’t think anything touches the failure of getting divorced from my 2 year old son’s mother.”
The exes now have a close relationship while all three have maintained a blended family. The subject of the “throuple” which Jada has coined the three of them, even came up on an episode of Red Table Talk last year. She said,
“You know what’s so interesting, though? Why it’s so not foreign to me too is that I’ve had a non-sexual throuple for years with Sheree. When you have your husband that is taking care of another woman and spending time with another woman, it’s the same thing.”
Jada said the inspiration for that episode came because Willow Smith was curious about polyamory, which is defined as being in multiple relationships with the consent of everyone involved. It was also compared to polygamy when a man has multiple wives.
When Jada was asked if she’d be interested in being in a throuple she said,
“Hell, yeah. You know what? I could do a throuple. I could. I could probably be romantically engaged with somebody else, but I can only have sex with one person. I’m sexually monogamous, but I definitely could be romantically poly. Maybe if I was back in the day, but today, I could have only one.”
Sheree was featured on the first episode of Red Table Talk as the ladies dished on the rocky beginning of their friendship when Jada first married Will. Fortunately, both ladies came around and Sheree told Jada she’s the best bonus mom Trey could ever have.
