In the midst of this video surfacing, Shane Dawson, who was once a popular presence on YouTube for his comedic parodies and skits, posted an apology video Friday night (June 26) and said he wanted to “own up” to his past mistakes, like doing blackface and portraying stereotypes of other races. He told his 23 million subscribers:
I was at least 20 when I started YouTube, and I made the decision to play stereotypes of Black people, or Asian people, or Mexicans, or pretty much every race. I made that decision. I said, ‘Oh this is funny,’ and I put that on the internet.
As of Saturday morning (June 27th), he hasn’t addressed the video of him and the poster of Willow Smith, now 19.
Willow Smith and her family have also not publicly responded yet. However, many have taken to Twitter to share their feelings.
